Our founding was shaped by the very real challenges researchers faced worldwide during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the speed and openness of scientific communication mattered more than ever. That experience made clear how vital open-access publishing is to overcoming moments of global urgency — and it gave us a founding principle we still build around today.
